Police Officer From Klerksdorp Hawks Faces Corruption And Extortion Charges

A lieutenant colonel attached to the Klerksdorp Hawks is set to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, facing charges of corruption and extortion.

The arrest of the officer followed a complaint made by a senior municipal official, who alleged extortion. National police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe provided details of the case.

According to Mathe, the City of Matlosana municipality’s senior official and CFO, Mercy Phetla (38), claimed that she had been extorted by a member of the Klerksdorp branch of the Hawks.

The accused officer allegedly accused Phetla of purchasing an Amarok Volkswagen bakkie with kickbacks she had received. He then threatened her with arrest unless she paid him R50,000.

In a troubling turn of events, the accused later demanded an additional R100,000 from Phetla. She complied and made the payment. Realising the seriousness of the situation, Phetla reported the matter to the police, prompting a sting operation in Silver Lakes, Pretoria.
