Police Minister Fuming As Amantle Samane Murder Suspect Appears In Court: “Hard To look At This Fellow”

The tragic murder of six-year-old Amantle Samane has left a profound impact on the South African community.

The recent court appearance of the suspect, Pethe Sara Simao, has reignited discussions surrounding safety, justice, and immigration issues in the country. Police Minister Senzo Mchunu expressed his overwhelming anger upon seeing Simao in court, clearly indicating the emotional weight this case holds.

During the initial appearance at Protea Glen Magistrate’s Court, the 24-year-old Simao faced four serious charges, including rape, murder, kidnapping, and contravention of the immigration act.

The proceedings attracted considerable media attention, allowing cameras to broadcast the courtroom developments despite attempts by the defence to maintain confidentiality regarding the accused’s identity.

The Minister’s Remarks and Emotional Reaction

Minister Mchunu did not hold back his feelings about the case, referring to the murder as a “major” and “devastating” tragedy.

He raised vital concerns about Simao’s undocumented status, emphasizing that he should not have been in South Africa in the first place.

Mchunu reiterated the state’s position against granting bail, stressing the necessity of keeping Simao in custody while awaiting further legal proceedings.

“It is terrible what he did, we have no words to describe,” the minister continued.

Mchunu praised the police and the Orlando East community for their efforts in apprehending the suspect.

“We have no doubt that they have done a sterling job. On the side of justice, we are encouraging them there must be no room here for any bail and for this case to derail in whatever way.

“We are very confident that we are going to see the case through together with this fellow until he is taken to judgment.”

The case is postponed until November 1 for a formal bail hearing, signalling a commitment to ensuring justice for Amantle Samane.
