Police Foil Robbery In Sandton, Arrest Six Suspects And Recover High-calibre Firearms

In a commendable display of swift action and effective collaboration, the Johannesburg Flying Squad intercepted a courier company bakkie and a private Toyota bakkie, apprehending six armed suspects who were allegedly en route to commit a robbery in Sandton on Sunday, 24 March 2024.

The suspects, who were found in possession of two rifles and three pistols loaded with live rounds of ammunition, now face charges of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, as well as conspiracy to commit robbery.

The successful operation was the result of valuable information received by the police regarding a gang planning a robbery in the Johannesburg area, utilizing a marked courier truck.

Members of the Johannesburg Flying Squad diligently maintained surveillance and eventually spotted two vehicles matching the provided description travelling on the N1 South. Without hesitation, the police followed the suspects until they reached the M1 South in Sandton, where they promptly halted the vehicles.

Upon searching both vehicles, a branded courier company Ford bakkie driven by an employee of the company and a white Toyota double cab bakkie, law enforcement officials made a significant discovery.

Two rifles and three pistols were found in the possession of the suspects, highlighting the potential danger they posed to innocent lives. The firearms will undergo ballistic testing to determine if they have been used in the commission of other crimes, while the suspects themselves will be thoroughly profiled to ascertain if they have any involvement in other criminal activities.

“I commend our Flying Squad members who acted swiftly upon receiving the information and intercepted the suspects before they could carry out their criminal intentions, potentially resulting in the loss of innocent lives,” said Lieutenant General Mthombeni.

Lieutenant General Mthombeni also took the opportunity to extend his appreciation to the law-abiding community of Gauteng, who continue to play an integral role in combating crime. Their vigilance and willingness to report suspicious activities have proven invaluable in preventing criminal acts.
