American Pastor Kidnapped During Church Service In Motherwell

A shocking scene unfolded at a church service in Gqeberha on Thursday evening when an American missionary was kidnapped in front of his family and congregation. Josh Sullivan, a visiting pastor from Tennessee, was preaching at Fellowship Baptist Church in Motherwell when four armed and masked men stormed the building.
The incident took place around 7pm on Mambalaza Street, NU10, Motherwell, during an evening sermon.

Family spokesperson Jeremy Hall said: “They knew his name.”
“The men came into the church and initially held Meagan and walked her towards the door before saying, ‘Josh, is this your wife?’”
“They then pushed her to the ground and took Josh before driving off in his vehicle,” he said.
Eastern Cape police spokesperson Captain Andre Beetge confirmed the harrowing events. “It is alleged that while a sermon was being conducted at the church, four armed and masked male suspects entered the church,” Beetge said.
The suspects reportedly stole two cellphones before grabbing the 45-year-old pastor and forcing him into his vehicle—a silver Toyota Fortuner—which they used to flee the scene.
Getaway Vehicle Found, But Pastor Still Missing
Police later recovered the stolen vehicle abandoned in Motherwell. However, there was no trace of Sullivan, who is believed to be a foreign national serving on mission in South Africa.
Authorities have opened a case of kidnapping and armed robbery. The SAPS Anti-Gang Unit (AGU) is now leading the investigation.
“A case of kidnapping and armed robbery was opened at the SAPS Motherwell and is being investigated by SAPS Anti-Gang Unit (AGU),” said Beetge.
Police Call for Public Assistance in Finding Missing Pastor
As the search continues, police are urging anyone with information to come forward. The incident has sparked alarm in both local and international circles, raising concerns about the safety of missionaries and religious leaders in the region.
Any person with information that could assist police is urged to contact SAPS AGU Detectives, Detective Warrant Officer Dudley Ferreira at 082 387 5957 or call Crime Stop at 08600 10111 to remain anonymous.
Authorities have not yet confirmed a motive for the kidnapping. Meanwhile, Sullivan’s family and church community remain in distress as the investigation unfolds.
