Following a week of protests over financial exclusion and accommodation concerns, Wits SRC president Aphiwe Mnyamana was suspended from the university on Monday.
Mnyamana announced his suspension on Twitter, stating that he was awaiting orders from his legal counsel, Advocate Dali Mpofu.
“We will respond duly however the peaceful protest will continue with or without me,” he wrote on his Twitter account.

Mnyamana’s suspension came following a march to the house of the university’s vice-chancellor, Zeblon Vilakazi, and a protest outside it on Sunday in an attempt to put pressure on the university to satisfy their demands.
The students began demonstrating last Tuesday and have continued despite university threats of legal action.
Students had already rejected some of the university’s concessions, with SRC member Thato Lebitso saying that they were insignificant and made little difference to the predicament of students, who were still without accommodation and had yet to be registered weeks into the academic year.
