Cause of the Bridge Collapse
The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) reported that the bridge failure can be attributed to the heavy rains experienced across the province this past weekend.
Vehicles travelling on the N2 southbound carriageway have been diverted from Joiner Road due to the closure of the affected bridge section. SANRAL’s Vusi Mona has urged motorists to approach the site with caution.
Current Measures
Specialist engineers from SANRAL are currently onsite evaluating the damage and determining necessary remedial actions.
KZN MEC for Transport, Sboniso Duma, has also assured that he remains in close contact with Minister of Transport, Barbara Creecy, to expedite repair and maintenance work on the roads and bridges across the province.
