In a daring act of bravery, a driver of a Toyota Tazz in Durban South became a hero after pursuing a robber who had snatched her handbag and hit him with her car on a busy street.

The incident, which was captured on CCTV footage, has gained widespread attention on social media, with users praising the driver for her courageous actions.

The incident took place at a boom gate next to a petrol station on Wednesday. As the driver waited at the gate, two men approached her vehicle and swiftly opened the driver’s door, grabbing her bag.

However, their attempts to steal the car were thwarted when another motorist tried to run them over, causing them to flee.

Undeterred by the robbery, the brave driver immediately gave chase to the fleeing suspect. The suspect ran across a centre island, but the driver’s car collided with him, sending him flying through the air before landing several meters away.

The Toyota Tazz, momentarily leaving the ground as it hit the island, safely landed back on the road.

Remarkably, the entire incident unfolded in full view of police officers who were present at the petrol station. Social media users have rallied behind the driver, pledging to defend her if she faces charges for knocking down the robber.

Many expressed their frustration with the South African legal system, which they believe often prioritizes the rights of criminals over those of victims.

Ebrahim Ali, a social media user, commented, “Very brave – the hard reality is she may end up in jail, especially with this footage going around. The law in South Africa protects the criminal more than it does an aggrieved victim and is part of the reason we have spiraling crime. This will be a good test of our system.”

Another user, Viresh Singh, suggested that the video should be shown at driving schools as a lesson on how to handle such situations.

The KwaZulu-Natal police have confirmed that the driver’s handbag was recovered. Lt-Col Nqobile Gwala, a spokesperson for the police, stated, “Brighton Beach police are investigating a robbery case after an incident where a 43-year-old woman was robbed by two suspects.

“The complainant alleged she was driving her vehicle out of the mall when two suspects opened the door, grabbed her handbag, and ran away. She drove the vehicle and allegedly knocked the suspect who was in possession of her handbag.”

The 28-year-old suspect was swiftly arrested at the scene and is expected to appear in court on Thursday.
