Every now and then, there’s a story that’s so unbelievable that’s hard to believe it – and this is one of them: When the “dead” awoke and knocked on her own coffin, mourners received a lot more than they bargained for at a recent funeral.

Rosa Isabel Cespedes Callaca, a Peruvian woman, was due to be laid to rest during a service in the city of Lambayque just last week, according to the Daily Star. It’s not every day that people see a person rise from the dead at a funeral, so mourners now have a fascinating narrative to tell at dinner parties.

Callaca’s relatives began hearing unusual sounds emanating from inside the coffin as they carried it to the service. They then lowered it and opened the lid to discover she was still alive and staring at them.

“[She] opened her eyes and was sweating,” cemetery keeper Juan Segundo Cajo is reported as saying. “I went to my workplace right away and dialled 911.”

The relatives then transported her to a hospital, where she was hooked up to life-support equipment by medics while still in her coffin. Callaca, however, was too weak, and her condition deteriorated before she died a few hours later.

Her family has expressed their displeasure with her being reported deceased at first. “We want to know why my niece reacted yesterday when we were taking her to be buried,” the woman’s aunt is quoted as saying to local journalists. “We have videos of her pushing and touching the casket.”

They believe she was in a coma when paramedics assumed she had died. Callaca was involved in a terrible car accident that killed her brother-in-law and left her nephews with serious injuries.
