The city of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Services are currently working tirelessly to extinguish a devastating fire that has engulfed the Glencairn area near Main Road.
According to spokesperson Jermaine Carelse, over 20 firefighting resources have been deployed to the scene, with an incident management team set up in the main road to coordinate strategic decisions.
The flames, fueled by gale-force winds, have been spreading through properties in Echo Road. To maximize their efforts, the fire area has been divided into three divisions, each focused on saving property and minimizing damage.
Initial estimates suggested that at least nine properties had been destroyed, but Carelse clarified that three formal dwellings were destroyed, and four were partially damaged. Additionally, two females had to be evacuated from their home as it collapsed.
The city’s staff is also dealing with rockfalls caused by the inclement weather. Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis has activated emergency and rescue teams in preparation for an approaching storm.
In a video message posted on the city’s Facebook page, he urged residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel. Hill-Lewis also reminded locals of school closures in the Helderberg district on Monday and encouraged them to report any incidents to the city.
The gale-force winds have wreaked havoc not only in Glencairn but also in Stellenbosch, Somerset West, and parts of the Overberg. The city is working diligently to address the multiple challenges posed by these weather conditions and ensure the safety of its residents.
The fire and rescue services in Cape Town are fully committed to extinguishing the devastating fire in the Glencairn area. With over 20 firefighting resources and an incident management team in place, strategic decisions are being coordinated to combat the flames effectively.
The gale-force winds have presented a significant challenge, as they continue to fan the fire and facilitate its rapid spread. The flames have already reached properties in Echo Road, causing destruction and damage. In response, the fire area has been divided into three divisions, with each division focusing on saving property and minimizing further harm.
Despite the efforts to control the fire, several properties have been destroyed or partially damaged. The initial estimate of nine properties affected has been revised, with three formal dwellings destroyed and four partially damaged. Additionally, the collapse of a home necessitated the evacuation of two females.
The city’s staff is also dealing with rockfalls resulting from the adverse weather conditions. The inclement weather has prompted Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis to activate emergency and rescue teams in preparation for an approaching storm. Residents have been advised to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel.
