Two Tourists Killed In River Rafting Accident Near Hartbeespoort Dam

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) has confirmed the deaths of two Singapore tourists in Crocodile River, between the Lion Park and Hartbeespoort Dam, over the weekend.

It is believed that eight tourists had capsised on four canoes. The canoe voyage included twenty Singapore tourists and six local river guides.

According to NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon, their strategic rescue unit and police were dispatched to the scene, where 20 Singapore tourists and six local river guides were down the river.

“The six river guides were assisting and they were reporting that CPR efforts had been commenced on one male tourist and one female tourist.

“Six tourists and two river guides, both males, were rescued from the water with the cooperation of the river guides, the tourists themselves and the emergency services – the two river guides were unconscious and medical treatment was provided by paramedics to the river guides and to the tourists.”

Following extensive CPR efforts, the two tourists were declared dead by paramedics.

“The two river guides were stabilised by paramedics and transported to the hospital where they are recovering. The remaining 6 tourists who were rescued from the water were treated for injuries on the scene before being released.

“The bodies of the deceased have been taken into the care of Government Health Forensic Pathology Services,” added Lambinon.

Police have opened an Inquest docket.
