In the early hours of today, two male suspects from Zimbabwe, aged between 32 and 42, were apprehended at the Beitbridge border post in Limpopo.
They stand accused of attempting to smuggle 124 blasting cartridges and 109 safety fuses for commercial explosives into South Africa.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Limpopo, along with members of the Musina Explosive Unit, carried out the arrest soon after midnight.
According to Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, spokesperson for the SAPS in Limpopo, the operation was a collaborative effort between the police and explosive experts.
The suspects were travelling in a Toyota Quantum with a trailer when they were stopped for a routine inspection. During the search, officers discovered commercial explosives concealed inside various bags.
Following the discovery, members of the Musina Explosive Unit immediately attended the scene. They successfully confiscated 124 blasting cartridges and at least 109 safety fuses.
Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, the provincial commissioner of police in Limpopo, commended the members for their vigilance and dedication to duty. She emphasized the importance of such efforts in maintaining public safety and preventing potential threats.
