Two individuals lost their lives and seven others sustained injuries in a devastating double-vehicle crash on the N3 highway between Hilton and Cedara. The incident occurred on Friday morning when an ambulance, transporting patients, collided with a truck on the southbound side of the road.
Mark Winterboer, a member of Midlands EMS, expressed his uncertainty regarding the origins of the patients. He stated, “At the moment, we don’t know where they were coming from, but they were travelling from an outlying area for hospital visits or to another medical facility in Pietermaritzburg for further treatment.”

Winterboer further explained that the surviving patients would be transported to the appropriate medical facilities for continued care. However, he sadly added, “The individuals who lost their lives will be taken to mortuary facilities due to the shortage of space.”
The crash caused severe traffic congestion along the route, as the highway had to be reduced to a single lane. Winterboer described the extent of the injuries sustained by the patients, stating, “There appears to be a significant amount of trauma resulting from the impact of the collision. The entire left front section of the patient transport vehicle was torn off, leading to extensive trauma, fractures, and broken bones.”
This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the importance of road safety and the need for vigilance while traveling. Our thoughts and condolences go out to the families and loved ones of those affected by this heartbreaking event.
