A Durban family is mourning the loss of their beloved daughter, Selishia Temone Govender, who tragically lost her life in a horrific head-on collision on the M4 Ruth First Highway.
The 32-year-old from Foresthaven in Phoenix was just hours away from celebrating her birthday when the accident occurred, cutting short her life and leaving her loved ones devastated.
The accident took place on Tuesday afternoon, shortly before 3 p.m., near the Broadway offramp. According to Garrith Jamieson from ALS Paramedics, the scene was one of chaos as two vehicles collided head-on, resulting in one of the vehicles overturning and coming to rest on its roof. Selishia Govender, the female driver of one of the vehicles, was found severely entrapped in her car.
Emergency responders swiftly arrived at the scene, with the Durban Fire Department using specialized equipment to free Govender from the wreckage.
Advanced Life Support Paramedics worked diligently to stabilize her critical condition. Despite their efforts, Govender succumbed to her injuries at approximately 7.30 pm after being transported to a nearby hospital.
The devastating news came as a shock to the Govender family, who were eagerly awaiting Selishia’s birthday celebration the following day. Jace Nair, a family spokesperson and relative, expressed the family’s profound grief.
Recounting the events leading up to the accident, Nair shared that Selishia had been in contact with her father earlier that day, discussing the preparations for her birthday meal. When she failed to answer her phone and did not arrive home from work, her father grew increasingly anxious.
The family’s worst fears were confirmed when they received the tragic news and rushed to the hospital. Nair described Selishia as a loving daughter who shared a close bond with her parents and younger brother. The family, known for their humility, is struggling to come to terms with the sudden loss of their cherished family member.

In addition to her close-knit family, Selishia Govender was engaged to be married later this year, adding to the immense sorrow of her untimely passing. Her funeral is scheduled to take place on Friday in Grove End, Phoenix.
Colonel Robert Netshiunda, provincial police spokesperson, confirmed that a case of culpable homicide is currently under investigation. It is alleged that another motorist collided with Govender, causing her to become trapped in her vehicle.
