A tense standoff has brought taxi operations to a halt in Ekurhuleni, as traffic officials and taxi operators clash over the impounding of vehicles. The Germiston taxi rank, a bustling transport hub in the East Rand, now stands deserted as certain taxi associations have withdrawn their services in protest.
The withdrawal of services follows the impounding of eight vehicles belonging to owners of the greater Germiston Taxi Association. Outraged by what they perceive as unfair targeting, taxi operators have collectively decided to suspend services and voice their grievances.
The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) and taxi patrol vehicles have been deployed around the taxi rank to maintain order. However, the absence of taxi services has left commuters stranded, with some having to turn back in desperation.
The impact of the stayaway extends beyond the Germiston area, as major routes including Tembisa, Benoni, Alberton, and Katlehong experience disruptions. This tense situation has raised concerns about the inconvenience faced by residents who rely on taxis as their primary mode of transportation.
