On the evening of May 23, Matafeni Junior Secondary School in Lusikisiki, Eastern Cape, became the scene of a devastating tragedy.
A group of approximately seven children entered the school premises to access the school’s Wi-Fi, a seemingly innocent activity that took a horrifying turn. The children were confronted by the 62-year-old security guard responsible for the school’s safety.
Upon seeing the guard, the children attempted to flee, but the guard, in an inexplicable act of violence, fired shots at them.
Two 13-year-old boys were struck by the gunfire. Tragically, one of the boys succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The other boy, also 13, sustained injuries and was immediately rushed to the hospital for medical treatment. The rapid escalation from a routine visit to the school grounds to a deadly confrontation has left the community in shock and mourning.
Following the incident, the security guard fled the scene, prompting a swift response from local law enforcement.
Eastern Cape police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, confirmed the arrest of the security guard later that evening.
The tragic incident in Lusikisiki has resulted in swift legal actions against the accused security guard. His first appearance in the Lusikisiki Magistrate’s Court on Monday marked the beginning of a series of legal proceedings. The accused faces multiple severe charges, including murder, attempted murder, possession of a prohibited firearm, and illegal possession of ammunition.
Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene, has made formal statements reflecting the seriousness of the situation.
