A 38-year-old police constable has been arrested in connection with an incident that resulted in the death of two individuals and the attempted murder of three others.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) has confirmed the arrest of Constable Checha Doctor Makau for the incident that occurred on September 30, 2023.

According to Ipid spokesperson Phaladi Shuping, the incident unfolded when Constable Makau, who was stationed at Ogies Detectives, allegedly opened fire on individuals sitting in a car near his residence.
The victims, identified as Dineo Kekane and Ricardo Phenganane, both 24 years old, tragically lost their lives due to gunshot wounds. Additionally, Mbali Magakwe, Ivans Lekala, and Goodwill Mdluli sustained serious injuries but managed to survive the alleged shooting.
Constable Makau made his initial court appearance at the Ogies Magistrate’s Court on Monday, where he faced charges of two counts of murder and three counts of attempted murder. The case has been postponed to March 4 to allow for a formal bail application. In the meantime, the constable has been remanded in custody.
