Pick n Pay, a leading retailer in South Africa, has issued a recall for three brands of peanut butter due to elevated levels of aflatoxin.
The affected brands include No Name Smooth Peanut Butter, Eden Smooth Peanut Butter, and Eden Crunch Peanut Butter, which are sold nationwide.
In a statement released on Saturday, Pick n Pay explained that the decision to recall the products was made after in-house standard testing revealed higher than regulated levels of aflatoxin. Aflatoxin is a naturally occurring mycotoxin that can pose a health risk when consumed in excessive amounts.
As a precautionary measure, all stocks of the affected peanut butter brands have already been removed from Pick n Pay stores across the country.
The retailer emphasised that no other peanut butter brands sold at their stores are involved in the recall.
The health and safety of customers is of utmost importance to Pick n Pay. Customers who have purchased any of the recalled peanut butter products are urged to return them to any Pick n Pay store for a full refund.
This applies to products with expiration dates between now and July 2025, regardless of whether they have been opened or not.
Pick n Pay has also taken steps to engage with the relevant authorities, including the National Consumer Commission and the national department of health’s directorate of food control, to ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
