A nine-year-old Zimbabwean girl has given birth to a baby girl through a caesarean section.

According to a TimesLIVE report from October, the rape victim girl was 33 weeks pregnant and being watched by a group of specialised medical professionals and nurses at the United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH).

Journalists were informed by hospital acting CEO Dr. Harrison Rambanapasi that the girl gave birth to a healthy baby girl on Monday morning.

“I wish to inform the nation that our nine-year-old has given birth at UBH. Our specialists performed the C-section … The outcome is a healthy baby girl with a weight just above 3kg. Both the mother and the baby are in a stable condition,” said Rambanapasi.

“The pressure was very high as everyone wanted to see the patient, but the specialists focused on the needs of the patient and made sure that her right to privacy was protected and upheld.

“We continue to manage the patient with due dignity and look forward to other government departments like law enforcement, judiciary and social welfare to continue playing their part to ensure that this matter is concluded in the best interest of the patient.”

The girl’s father was arrested and is helping the police with their investigation.

In the meantime, the pregnancy of a second nine-year-old girl in Bindura, Mashonaland Central, has been confirmed. She was also allegedly a rape victim.

The girl is nearly seven months pregnant, said a medical examination, according to Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP).

Two boys, both 17 years old, were reportedly arrested by police in relation to her rape.

The girl is reportedly being cared for by social workers while being admitted to the Bindura Hospital, according to the state-owned Herald newspaper.

“The ZRP is now working with other relevant arms of the government to ensure that due processes are followed.”

According to a report by Dr. Admire Murongazvombo, the provincial medical director for Mashonaland Central, the girl is stable and will be housed in a safe place while awaiting delivery.

“We are collaborating with the social development department to tie up all loose ends and facilitate the placement of the child at a safe house which is critical in this matter,” said Murongazvombo.

“According to the reports we received, she is indeed nine years old. She is OK, calm and stable. We want her to be closer to antenatal care where she can be monitored. She still has several months before she is due. She already has a gynaecologist who has recommended that she delivers through caesarean section,” added Murongazvombo.
