Masonwabe Mapolisa, five, was found naked and covered in paint in a classroom at JA Ncaca Primary School in Lingelihle, Cradock in the Eastern Cape, following his mother’s desperate weekend search.

Masonwabe’s mother told TimesLive that he usually gets home at 12:30 on Fridays, but that was not the case on May 12.

The family spent the weekend looking for him and eventually filed a missing persons report. Masonwabe’s mother and the police detective assigned to the case went to school on Monday.

During assembly, one of the teachers hurried in and shouted that the boy had been found in one of the classrooms. He was naked and covered with paint. It’s unclear how he got into this situation or who locked him in the classroom.

Masonwabe was transported to Cradock Provincial Hospital by one of the school teachers. He was eventually taken to Nelson Mandela Bay for medical treatment, and is currently recovering well.

The incident is being investigated by the Eastern Cape Department of Education.
