On the evening of May 20, 2024, a troubling incident unfolded in Nemato, a suburb of Port Alfred. At approximately 7 pm, the victim, who had just arrived at his residence, was approached by an unknown woman.
She inquired about his brother, initiating a sequence of events that would soon escalate into a harrowing ordeal. As the victim attempted to respond, the woman, in conjunction with three armed men, overpowered him.
These men brandished firearms, compelling him at gunpoint back into his house. The assailants’ intentions became clear as they forcefully abducted the victim, taking him away in his VW Caravelle.
The initial moments of the kidnapping were fraught with tension and fear, as the victim was rendered helpless in the face of the armed attackers. The swift and coordinated nature of the kidnapping indicated a premeditated plan, designed to ensure the victim’s compliance and to facilitate a quick escape.

Law enforcement agencies were soon alerted to the situation, initiating a widespread search operation. Despite the rapid response, the kidnappers managed to maintain a significant lead.
However, the vehicle carrying the victim was eventually spotted heading towards Gqeberha at around 1 am on May 21, 2024. This sighting was a critical breakthrough, providing the authorities with a tangible lead in their efforts to locate and rescue the victim.
The hours following the kidnapping were marked by intense efforts from the police and other security forces. The victim’s family and the community of Nemato remained on edge, anxiously awaiting any updates.
On May 22, 2024, the Nelson Mandela Bay District Crime Combating Unit (CCU) executed a meticulously planned raid in Zwide, based on actionable intelligence. The operation, initiated by the CCU, exemplified the critical role of intelligence in combating serious crimes.
During the raid, officers successfully recovered the victim’s vehicle keys and a silver Hyundai i120, which were pivotal to the investigation.
A firearm was also found at the scene, adding a layer of gravity to the case. The swift and decisive action of the CCU did not stop there. Their relentless pursuit led them to Kwazakele, where the victim’s vehicle was discovered, further solidifying the trail of evidence.
The final chapter of the rescue operation unfolded in Kwanobuhle, where the victim was found bound in a house.
A 40-year-old suspect was apprehended at the scene, facing multiple charges including kidnapping and possession of an unlicensed firearm. Meanwhile, the pursuit of the remaining suspects continues, with law enforcement agencies leaving no stone unturned.
Colonel Priscilla Naidu, the provincial police spokesperson, commended the operation, emphasizing the synergy between different units that contributed to this success.
“This operation is a clear indication of what can be achieved through effective collaboration and intelligence-driven policing,” she remarked.
Similarly, Major General Vuyisile Ncata, the Nelson Mandela Bay District Police Commissioner, lauded the officers’ dedication and swift action. “The rescue operation and subsequent arrest highlight our commitment to ensuring the safety and security of our community,” he stated.
