A 41-year-old man has been arrested and charged with attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
The arrest follows an incident that occurred a few weeks ago in Masoyi, Mpumalanga, where an 18-year-old man sustained a gunshot wound. According to police spokesperson Brig Selvy Mohlala, it is alleged that the victim’s father was cleaning a firearm when it accidentally discharged.

In the course of the investigation into the shooting, it was discovered that the man arrested was not the lawful owner of the firearm. The firearm in question belonged to his late father. The suspect did not possess a license for the 9mm pistol that was seized by the police. To determine if the firearm was used in any other criminal activities, it will undergo ballistic testing.
The arrested individual is expected to appear in the White River magistrate’s court on Monday to face charges related to attempted murder and illegal possession of a firearm.
