A multi-disciplinary crime intelligence-driven operation carried out by the District Task Team and Rustenburg Detectives has led to the arrest of a 46-year-old suspect for attacking an off-duty female police officer.
The incident took place near the taxi rank in Rustenburg on Thursday, 30 November 2023. According to available information, the suspects, who are taxi patrollers, assaulted the police officer based on the suspicion that her boyfriend is a bolt taxi operator.
During the attack, the police officer’s pair of spectacles worth R6000.00 was damaged. Preliminary investigations have revealed that the arrested suspect is linked to cases of hijacking, kidnapping, and extortion.
He is expected to appear in the Rustenburg Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 04 December 2023, where he will face charges of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and malicious damage to property.
The incident has drawn strong condemnation from the Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, particularly as it occurred during the 16 Days of Activism For No Violence Against Women and Children.
Such acts of violence against women, especially those committed by individuals entrusted with upholding the law, are deeply concerning. The police force remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all citizens, and incidents like these will not be tolerated.
The arrest of the suspect is a testament to the dedication and effectiveness of the District Task Team and Rustenburg Detectives. It serves as a reminder that those who perpetrate violence will be held accountable for their actions.
Efforts to create safer communities for women and children must continue, and the justice system must ensure that those responsible for such crimes face the full consequences of their actions.
