In a surprising turn of events, just hours after the Department of Correctional Services boasted about their success in dealing with prison escapes, Limpopo police found themselves in a predicament.

They issued a statement stating that they were actively searching for an inmate who had managed to flee from custody while being transported from prison.

The suspect, identified as 31-year-old Thapelo Sebola, allegedly escaped from a police van while being transported from Polokwane prison to Motetema.

The incident occurred on the D4100 road at Mogaladi junction to Tompi Seleka Agricultural College. According to police spokesperson Col Malesela Ledwaba, the suspect managed to escape into the bushes.

As investigations into the circumstances surrounding the escape are underway, it has been revealed that the suspect is facing serious charges, including murder and attempted murder, which were reported at Motetema and Lebowakgomo respectively.

Immediately after the incident, the police launched a manhunt to locate and apprehend the escaped inmate. Limpopo police commissioner Lt-General Thembi Hadebe has called on members of the public to come forward with any information that could lead to the rearrest of Thapelo Sebola.
