A police officer in KwaZulu-Natal has been arrested after being seen on video kicking seven men who were lying on the ground.
The arrest was made on Monday, according to Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) spokeswoman Robbie Raburabu, following investigations into a video that was circulating on social media.
Sergeant Sibusiso Xolani Kunene, 46, is seen in the video “brutally assaulting and kicking” the men as they lie on their stomachs on the side of the road.
He approaches the men, holding a rifle, and appears to converse with one of them before kicking him in the face. The cop then kicks two more men in the same manner.
In the footage, there are numerous other men dressed in uniforms for police officers
At the time of publication, KwaZulu-Natal police had not responded to SurgeZirc SA inquiries on the incident.
“The incident is alleged to have happened on 22 August 2023 on the N11 in Newcastle, KwaZulu Natal. Two victims are alleged to have lost some teeth and others sustained some bruises. IPID got together a team to investigate the allegations,” said Raburabu.
