The Kwazulu-Natal Health Department is calling on the police to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the tragic murder of Dr Zamambo Siphokazi Mkhize, a well-known paediatrician in Pietermaritzburg.
Dr Mkhize’s lifeless body was discovered in the trunk of her car, approximately 3km away from the Harry Gwala Regional Hospital, where she worked.

The department expresses its deepest condolences to Dr. Mkhize’s family, friends, and colleagues, recognizing the significant loss they have suffered.
As a dedicated healthcare professional, Dr. Mkhize played a critical role in saving lives on a daily basis. Her untimely death is a tremendous loss not only to her loved ones but also to the medical fraternity.
According to the police reports, Dr Mkhize was found with apparent assault marks and a gunshot wound. She had reported for duty but left early to attend to an emergency at home. Unfortunately, she never arrived at her destination.
The provincial police spokesperson, Col Robert Netshiunda, has confirmed that the Plessislaer officers are currently investigating the murder. At this stage, the suspects remain unidentified, and the motive behind the crime has yet to be established.
Although robbery cannot be ruled out, further investigations are required to determine the exact circumstances surrounding Dr Mkhize’s tragic death.
The Kwazulu-Natal Health Department emphasizes the importance of leaving “no stone unturned” in the pursuit of justice for Dr Mkhize.
The department urges the police to conduct a thorough investigation, ensuring that all leads are pursued and all potential evidence is examined meticulously.
