A High Court sitting in Pretoria has made a significant ruling by setting aside President Cyril Ramaphosa’s recognition of AmaZulu King MisiZulu kaZwelithini.

This decision comes in response to an application filed by Misizulu’s half-brother, Prince Simakade Zulu, who contested his ascension to the throne.

They claimed that not all members of the royal family were adequately represented and that the process exhibited bias towards Misizulu KaZwelithini, the younger brother.

In a ruling delivered on Monday, Judge Norman Davis declared the certification of MisiZulu as King to be unlawful and invalid.

As a result, Davis has ordered President Cyril Ramaphosa to establish an investigative committee to examine Simakade’s allegations that the nomination process did not adhere to customary laws and principles.

This ruling leaves the Zulu throne, at least according to the courts, again vacant. The decision to set aside Ramaphosa’s declaration of Misizulu as King has significant implications for the Zulu royal family and the succession process.

It underscores the importance of following proper procedures and ensuring fairness in matters of such magnitude. The Zulu monarchy holds great cultural and historical significance in South Africa, and the appointment of a King is a matter of deep importance to the Zulu people.

It is crucial that the selection process is transparent, inclusive, and in accordance with established customs and traditions.

By ordering an investigative committee, the Pretoria High Court aims to address the concerns raised by Prince Simakade Zulu and ensure that the nomination process is thoroughly examined.

This committee will play a crucial role in determining the legitimacy of MisiZulu’s ascension to the throne and the overall integrity of the Zulu royal family’s procedures.
