The Hawks in Mpumalanga are currently on the lookout for an attorney who stands accused of embezzling R1.8 million from a client of the Road Accident Fund (RAF). The attorney in question, Mantladi Jo-Anne Mmela, has been evading court appearances since her initial arrest in September 2022.
Mmela had appeared before the Middelburg Magistrates’ Court on September 21, where she was granted bail in the amount of R25,000. However, she has failed to appear in court ever since.
According to Hawks Mpumalanga spokesperson, Warrant Officer Thandi Tshabalala, the 42-year-old attorney was appointed by a complainant whose child had sustained severe injuries in an accident. Mmela allegedly submitted the claim to the RAF, which was subsequently processed and payments were made into her Trust account. However, instead of transferring the funds to the victim’s guardian account as claimed, she redirected the money to another individual’s account.
In light of these developments, Warrant Officer Tshabalala has urged community members to come forward with any information regarding Mmela’s whereabouts. Those with relevant information are encouraged to contact the investigating officer, Warrant Officer Zandile Mashaba, at 082 ‪303 9880‬.
