Seven Gauteng police officers were remanded in custody after appearing in the Nigel Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
The suspects are charged with stealing, corruption, malicious damage to property, and defeating the administration of justice, according to National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana.
“It is alleged that on 15 July 2023, the seven officials went to LM Café in Nigel. They damaged some of the property in the shop, including breaking a safe where money was kept. They took an amount of R172 400 and 152 boxes of illicit, illegal cigarettes.”
According to Mahanjana, the shopkeeper reported the incident to the South African Police Service the same day.
The seven were later apprehended by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).
The case has been rescheduled for August 7 for a formal bail application.
“The NPA intends to oppose bail in the matter,” Mahanjana said.
