On Monday morning, a devastating accident occurred on the N11 at Ga-Machikiri in the Waterberg district in Limpopo, resulting in the loss of four construction workers’ lives. The incident occurred when a light motor vehicle, an Opel Astra sedan, collided with the workers who were engaged in road construction activities.
The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety has identified speeding and reckless driving as potential causes of the accident.
Vongani Chauke, the department’s spokesperson, confirmed that four workers tragically lost their lives at the scene, while two others were rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention. The driver of the Astra sedan was also taken to the hospital for treatment, and a case of culpable homicide has been opened.
The news of this accident has left the community and the Limpopo MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Florence Radzilani, in shock. MEC Radzilani expressed her deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a speedy recovery to the injured survivors.
In light of this tragic incident, MEC Radzilani urged all drivers to exercise extra caution when approaching construction sites.
