Former SASSA Officials Arrested For Fraudulent Disability Grants

This is not the first time that the two former SASSA officials have come under scrutiny. Earlier this year, they were arrested by the same team for similar offences and were subsequently released on bail.

The Hawks in Limpopo have made a significant breakthrough in their ongoing efforts to combat fraud within the Social Security Agency SASSA. Two former officials of SASSA, along with nine alleged accomplices, have been arrested in Tzaneen for their involvement in a fraudulent disability grant scheme.

The arrests follow a thorough investigation by the Hawks, which revealed that the former SASSA officers had been registering their accomplices for disability grants that they did not qualify for. This elaborate scheme involved recruiting members of the public to apply for the grants, even though they were not disabled.

According to the authorities, the two former SASSA officials, who had served as administration clerks, took advantage of their positions to exploit the system. In 2018, they began soliciting individuals to apply for disability grants, promising them easy money without the need for genuine disability.

Once the applications were successfully processed, the initial payments meant for the unlawful beneficiaries were funneled to the former officials as gratification. However, this was just the beginning of the fraudulent scheme. The unlawful beneficiaries continued to receive the grants for an extended period, until the suspicious activities were finally uncovered by SASSA authorities.

Upon discovering the fraudulent scheme, SASSA immediately reported the matter to the Hawks, who swiftly took action and apprehended the eleven suspects. All of them are scheduled to appear in the Tzaneen Magistrate’s Court today to face charges related to fraud and corruption.

This is not the first time that the two former SASSA officials have come under scrutiny. Earlier this year, they were arrested by the same team for similar offences and were subsequently released on bail. However, the ongoing investigation has now revealed that these suspects were involved in multiple instances of fraud, indicating a pattern of criminal behaviour.

The arrest of these individuals sends a strong message that fraud and corruption within social security agencies will not be tolerated. SASSA, along with the dedicated efforts of the Hawks, is committed to upholding the integrity of the system and ensuring that deserving individuals receive the assistance they require.

The fraudulent disability grant scheme is not only a betrayal of public trust but also deprives those who are genuinely in need of the support they deserve. It is crucial that such schemes are detected and dismantled to prevent further exploitation of the system.
