Five Suspects Arrested Including ACSA Employees For Drug Trafficking At OR Tambo International Airport

On Wednesday, 15 November, a highly coordinated operation led by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (HAWKS) resulted in the arrest of five suspects, including two employees of Airports Company South Africa (ACSA), for drug trafficking at OR Tambo International Airport (ORTIA).

These arrests were made in connection with a recent large drugs consignment that was confiscated in Australia.

The Allegations

The five suspects are facing charges of drug trafficking, contravention of the Civil Aviation Act, and contravention of the Customs and Excise Act.

According to the HAWKS, these individuals, who are employees of various companies at ORTIA, are accused of facilitating the transportation of drugs into and out of the airport. Two of the suspects work for ACSA, two are employed by Menzies Aviation, and one is from Swissport.

The successful operation was the result of a joint investigation team’s efforts. The Provincial Head of the Hawks in Gauteng, Major General Ebrahim Kadwa, commended the team for their dedication in ridding the airport of individuals involved in illicit activities that tarnish the reputation of ORTIA and the country as a whole.
