Five Arrested At Border For Possession Of Large Sum Of Money

Following the discovery, the four individuals without the requisite documents were arrested for being in South Africa illegally.

The Border Management Authority (BMA) has recently apprehended five individuals at the Qashasnek border post for possessing a substantial amount of money hidden in black plastic bags.

This arrest was made during a routine vehicle inspection by BMA officers. BMA spokesperson Mmeme Mogotsi provided detailed information about the incident. According to Mogotsi, a vehicle carrying five Lesotho nationals was stopped for a routine check.

Upon inspection, it was found that four of the individuals had previously been declared undesirable and had been banned from entering the country under the Immigration Act.

Further searches revealed that the suspects were in possession of South African currency totalling R1,480,050, which was concealed in black plastic bags.

Following the discovery, the four individuals without the requisite documents were arrested for being in South Africa illegally.

A case was promptly opened against them. The concealed money was counted and verified to ensure it was not counterfeit before being deposited into the state bank account. Further investigations are ongoing to determine the origins and intended use of the money.
