The Gauteng Department of Education announced on Wednesday that two girls who were enrolled in schools in Ekurhuleni have tragically died by suicide.

One was a grade 8 student at Geluksdal Secondary School, while the other was a grade 12 student at Nigel High School.

The department confirmed their deaths in an official statement.

According to the spokesperson, Steve Mabona, the student from Nigel High School consumed poison at home on Thursday, while the Geluksdal Secondary School student also ingested poison at her residence on Tuesday evening.

The latter was taken to a nearby medical facility, but unfortunately passed away in the vehicle while being transported for medical attention.

Mabona mentioned that a psycho-social support team will be visiting the affected schools and the families to provide the necessary assistance.

The department extends its deepest condolences to the families and school communities affected by this tragic loss.
