In a recent incident that has drawn widespread attention, a police constable from the Mothibistad Police Station in the Northern Cape was arrested after being filmed staggering and falling on the roadside while on duty.
The constable, whose identity has not been publicly disclosed, appeared heavily intoxicated. The video, which quickly went viral, shows him in full uniform, struggling to maintain his balance and eventually collapsing on the road.

The video elicited mixed reactions from the community. While some residents were seen laughing and making comments, others expressed concern. In the video, a community member can be heard saying, “etsa video,” which means “take a video,” while another exclaimed, “heeee bonang,” translating to “come see this.”
One community member activated her car’s hazard lights in an attempt to urge the constable to move off the road, only to realize he was intoxicated. Another resident commented that police officers often resort to drinking due to personal problems.

Brigadier Mashay Gamieldien, spokesperson for the Northern Cape Police, confirmed the details of the incident and the arrest. The constable has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving negligently and recklessly, and unauthorized use of a state vehicle. He has already appeared before the Mothibistad Magistrate’s Court and is currently released on bail.
The Northern Cape Provincial Commissioner of Police, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, has strongly condemned the constable’s actions. She emphasized that internal departmental procedures are underway in accordance with SAPS 2016 disciplinary regulations.

Otola stated, “Police officers are meant to lead by example. We do not expect the behaviour depicted in the video from any of our members. We will ensure a thorough internal process is conducted into the behaviour of this police officer. We do not condone and will not allow such behaviour in our ranks.”
This incident highlights the need for strict adherence to professional conduct among police officers and serves as a reminder of the trust and responsibility vested in law enforcement personnel.
