Watch| Truck Driver Who Assisted Police Chase Overloaded Bus With Unruly Zimbabwean Passengers Assaulted

Three individuals, including a bus driver, have been apprehended for their alleged involvement in assaulting a truck driver who attempted to assist the police during a chase involving an overloaded bus with unruly passengers.

The driver, along with two Zimbabwean nationals, now face charges of assault, reckless and negligent driving, illegal immigration, damage to property, and obstruction of justice.

The incident took place on the Ben Schoeman Highway when officers from the Tshwane Metro Police Department’s accident unit were conducting road policing.

They noticed a bus approaching from the Fountains area, heading towards Centurion, with an excessive number of passengers. Some of the passengers were even standing behind the front windscreen near the driver.

Upon stopping the bus, the driver presented a Zimbabwean driving license, passport, and cross-border permit. However, further investigation revealed that these documents were counterfeit under the National Land Transport Act.

As the officers attempted to detain the driver, the passengers on the bus instructed him to flee the scene.

The police officers gave chase and called for backup from various units. Meanwhile, a truck driver, witnessing the events, tried to block the bus.

The bus came to a halt, and at this point, the Zimbabwean nationals exited the vehicle and allegedly assaulted the truck driver. In an attempt to escape, the bus driver rammed into the police vehicle.

The bus was subsequently impounded, and the driver, along with the two Zimbabwean nationals, was arrested. Other occupants of the bus managed to flee the scene. The trio is expected to make a court appearance in the near future.

This incident highlights the importance of road safety and the cooperation required between law enforcement agencies and the public to maintain order and ensure the safety of all road users.
