Six supporters of the African National Congress (ANC) lost their lives in a bus accident while en route to the party’s 112th birthday celebrations in Mbombela.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning. The group, traveling from Limpopo, was joining other party supporters who had gathered in Mpumalanga for the ANC birthday rally.
The ANC, South Africa’s governing party, had organized the event to commemorate its birthday and provide a platform for ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa to outline the national executive committee’s (NEC’s) priorities for the year. However, the festivities were overshadowed by this devastating accident.
Police Minister Bheki Cele provided details on how the accident unfolded, stating, “Those buses in the convoy, the other bus hit the other one in the back and went into the ditch, and we have lost 6 people there.” The exact cause of the collision is still under investigation.
