An undisclosed amount of money was stolen during a break-in at the KwaThema licence renewal drive-through centre in Ekurhuleni. The incident, which occurred over the weekend, was discovered when staff reported for duty on Monday morning.
Lieutenant Colonel Kelebogile Thepa, spokesperson for the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD), provided details about the incident.
“On Monday at 8 a.m., the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department’s licence division members noticed that the official building had been ransacked,” said Thepa. “The stolen cash included funds from a secure wall-mounted safe.”

The break-in likely took place between Saturday and Sunday nights, as there were reports of power failures in the vicinity during that time. Authorities suspect that the perpetrators exploited the darkness caused by the outages to gain access to the premises.
The EMPD’s security and loss control unit, along with members of the South African Police Service (SAPS), were promptly summoned to investigate the incident. Preliminary findings indicate that the robbery was well-planned, and authorities are actively pursuing leads to apprehend the culprits.
Thepa emphasized that investigations are underway, and arrests are imminent. The community is urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity related to the incident.
