The man accused of torching Parliament, Zandile Mafe, is unfit to face trial, according to the Western Cape High Court on Thursday.

Zandile Mafe’s matter appeared before the court in his absence.

Mafe is being held on allegations of housebreaking with intent to execute terrorism and arson, terrorism, arson, and theft. He has been detained since January 2nd when the National Assembly building in Cape Town was destroyed by fire.

Mafe was taken for a mental evaluation at the Fort England Psychiatric Hospital in the Eastern Cape earlier this year after refusing to be committed to Valkenberg Hospital in Cape Town.

The much-anticipated medical report was finally released, and the outcome of the independent psychiatric assessment done at the request of Mafe’s defence counsel declared him unable to stand trial.

This comes after two different reports from state-appointed experts on Mafe.

Mafe shocked the court last month when he went on a rampage in which he claimed to purposely burning Parliament.

“You must take it to Bloemfontein, that Parliament. If you don’t take it to Pretoria. If you don’t relocate. It must move. This Parliament here I burnt it intentionally. Me, Christmas Zandile Mafe. I’m going to burn it more if it doesn’t move to Bloemfontein or Pretoria,” he said while gesturing his hands all over the place.

Mafe also went on a load-shedding rage.

At this point, it is unknown what steps will be taken.

Mafe is being held in Pollsmoor Prison’s hospital section.

The case has been postponed until September 1 so that legal counsel can explain to the judge how they want to proceed.
