Agnes Segomotsi Setshwantsho, the alleged insurance fraud killer, has been denied bail by the Molopo Magistrate’s Court in North West.
Setshwantsho is accused of murdering her family members in order to claim insurance payouts. The suspect, who was arrested in November 2023, is facing charges of murder, defeating the ends of justice, and two counts of fraud.
One of the victims, Bonolo Modiseemang, died in March 2023 due to poisoning. Initially declared a “natural death,” investigations revealed that Modiseemang fell ill after consuming a sandwich allegedly given to her by Setshwantsho.
It has been alleged that the accused fraudulently took out a R3 million life insurance policy on Modiseemang six months before her passing.

The South African Police Service (Saps) is also investigating Setshwantsho for the mysterious deaths of her husband, two daughters, son, and brother. Her son passed away in July last year, while her spouse and daughters died in 2016, 2015, and 2005, respectively.
The denial of bail means that Setshwantsho will remain behind bars as the legal proceedings continue.
