Accused In Phala Phala Burglary Case Asserts Non-flight Risk Status And Cooperation

"I am saying that if I wanted to run away about this case, I could have done so a long time ago - even when I was crossing the border and they were checking me. If I had the intention of fleeing, I would have done it a long time ago."

One of the accused in the Phala Phala burglary case, Imanuwela David, appeared at the Bela Bela Magistrates Court in Limpopo for his formal bail application.

David, along with two other accused, is facing charges of housebreaking and theft involving approximately US$580,000 in cash stolen from Ramaphosa’s game farm in February 2020.

During his testimony in court, David revealed that he had previously been detained for six months in Namibia after illegally crossing the border to visit his sick grandmother. Despite this, he emphasized that he is a South African citizen with siblings in Namibia.

David also addressed his prior convictions, stating that he had once been fined R300 for driving under the influence and had once illegally crossed the border to visit his sick grandmother.

However, he asserted that he is not a flight risk and has fully cooperated with the police throughout the Phala Phala case.

In his own words, David said, “I am saying that if I wanted to run away about this case, I could have done so a long time ago – even when I was crossing the border and they were checking me. If I had the intention of fleeing, I would have done it a long time ago.”
