Over the weekend, a routine stop and search by the flying squad in Goodwood, Cape Town, led to a significant breakthrough in combating illegal activities.
The Western Cape police, represented by spokesperson Colonel Andrè Traut, reported the arrest of a 28-year-old motorist driving a double-cab bakkie. The officers uncovered an unlicensed 9mm firearm, a substantial quantity of drugs, and a large amount of cash in the vehicle.
The investigation did not end with the initial arrest. Acting on information gathered, the police extended their search to an apartment in the Bergzicht complex in Goodwood.
According to Colonel Traut, the apartment, leased in the suspect’s name, was never used as a residence but rather served as a storage facility for illegal items.
During the search of the apartment, the police found a staggering 19 firearms of different calibres, including an AK47 assault rifle, a shotgun, and various automatic and semi-automatic firearms.
In addition, an assortment of drugs valued at R3 million was seized. This operation marks a significant step in tackling the issue of gangsterism in the province.
Colonel Traut emphasized that the investigation is ongoing, and the possibility of apprehending more suspects is not ruled out.
The arrest and subsequent seizure underline the commitment of the Western Cape police to curb illegal activities and ensure the safety and security of the community.
