According to IPSS Search and Rescue, authorities in northern KwaZulu-Natal retrieved a deceased baby from a pit latrine in Maphumulo after the newborn was allegedly dumped by a 16-year-old mother.
After receiving information that a baby had been dipped within the two-metre-deep toilet, IPSS Rescue and the Umhlali South African Police Service (SAPS) K9 Search and Rescue team responded.

According to emergency personnel, after giving birth, a 16-year-old female put the baby inside a packet and dumped the infant in an abandoned pit latrine in the iLembe District.
“Reports from the scene indicate that a 16-year-old female allegedly concealed the birth of a baby and disposed of it in a 2-meter-deep abandoned pit latrine in a neighbour’s yard after placing it in a plastic packet.

“The packet containing the newborn’s body was successfully retrieved from the pit latrine,” IPSS Rescue said.
The area is largely rural, according to the Maphumulo Local Municipality.
As part of their investigation, the police retrieved the baby’s body, and the 16-year-old female and her mother were arrested, according to IPSS.
