N17 Horror: Driver Dies After Hatchback Crashes Into Truck And Rolls Several Times

A man believed to be in his 20s has died after the hatchback he was travelling in crashed into the back of a truck on the N17 in Ekurhuleni and rolled several times.

The fatal collision happened in the early hours of Friday, 25 September 2026, on the eastbound carriageway of the N17, just after the Rondebult Road on-ramp.

The hatchback was carrying five men when it collided with the rear of an articulated truck-trailer, commonly known as a superlink. The impact sent the vehicle rolling several times before it came to rest in the middle of the freeway.

Man Trapped In Wreckage After N17 Crash

Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) received the emergency call at approximately 3:30am and dispatched firefighting and rescue teams to the scene.

DEMS spokesperson William Ntladi said rescuers found the hatchback badly damaged after it had rolled several times.

“One male passenger, allegedly the driver, was found trapped inside the wreckage, having sustained intense injuries and was declared dead on scene,” Ntladi said.

The four other occupants, all men, suffered serious but stable injuries. They were transported by ambulance to nearby medical facilities for further treatment.

The driver of the truck was not injured.

Jaws Of Life Used To Recover Deceased Driver

The extent of the damage left the suspected driver trapped inside the wreckage, prompting rescuers to use specialised hydraulic equipment known as the Jaws of Life.

The equipment was used to gain access to the vehicle and recover the deceased.

Two lanes of the N17 were temporarily closed while emergency crews worked at the scene. The area was subsequently handed over to law enforcement officials for further investigation and rehabilitation.

Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision.

N17 Crash Follows Fatal Midrand Collision

The latest Ekurhuleni crash comes just days after another deadly collision in Midrand claimed five lives.

On Tuesday evening, 22 September, a minibus taxi collided with vehicles at the intersection of Old Pretoria Main Road and Maxwell Drive in Waterfall, Midrand. Five taxi passengers died, while 10 other people were injured.

JMPD spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla said preliminary information indicated that the red Toyota Hi-Ace taxi allegedly failed to stop at a traffic signal before colliding with two Mercedes-Benz vehicles.

Both the taxi and one of the Mercedes-Benz vehicles caught fire after the impact. The taxi driver was seriously injured, while the occupants of the other vehicles survived.

The Midrand collision is being investigated as a culpable homicide case, while the cause of Friday morning’s N17 crash remains under investigation.
