Limpopo Teacher Granted R1,000 Bail After Alleged Rape Of 17-Year-Old Learner

A 32-year-old Limpopo teacher has been granted R1,000 bail after allegedly raping a 17-year-old learner inside his vehicle, prompting strong condemnation from the province’s police commissioner.

The teacher appeared before the Ritavi Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 21 September, after being arrested in connection with the alleged sexual offence. He is expected back in court on 12 November, subject to his bail conditions.

According to SAPS, the alleged incident took place on 2 September at about 19:30 in the Ritavi policing area. Police said the learner only reported the alleged rape several days later, after telling her school principal about what had happened.

Teacher Allegedly Lured Learner With Stationery Request

Police allege that the 17-year-old received a telephone call from the teacher, who asked her to collect stationery on behalf of a friend.

According to SAPS, the teacher told the learner that he would wait for her along the street. When she arrived, he allegedly asked her to get into his vehicle.

Police said the teacher then drove a short distance before stopping alongside the road. He allegedly moved from the driver’s seat to the back of the vehicle, where the learner was sitting, and raped her.

The allegations have not been tested in court, and the accused remains presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

Learner Reported Alleged Rape Days Later

SAPS said the learner did not immediately tell her mother about the alleged incident because she was afraid.

She eventually reported the matter to her school principal on 7 September. The incident was subsequently reported to police, and the learner was taken to a local hospital for a medical examination.

The docket was then transferred to the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit in Tzaneen for further investigation.

The specialised unit is continuing with the investigation into the allegations.

Limpopo Police Commissioner Condemns Alleged Attack

Limpopo Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers strongly condemned the alleged conduct and said teachers hold a position of trust and responsibility towards learners.

“It is disturbing that a person entrusted with the education and safety of our children could allegedly commit such a heinous act against a learner. Police in Limpopo will ensure that this case receives the necessary support to ensure a successful prosecution,” said Scheepers.

Scheepers also encouraged victims of sexual offences to report incidents to police without delay and commended the learner for coming forward.

The teacher remains out on R1,000 bail and is due to return to the Ritavi Magistrate’s Court on 12 November 2026.
