McDonald’s Sales Decline Globally For The First Time In Three Years

McDonald’s, a global fast-food giant, has reported a surprising drop in its worldwide sales, marking its first decline in 13 quarters. The company attributes this downturn to consumers increasingly seeking deals and shying away from higher-priced menu items, including the iconic Big Macs.

Persistent inflation has significantly impacted lower-income consumers, who are now opting for more affordable food options at home.

This shift has compelled fast food chains such as McDonald’s, Burger King, Wendy’s, and Taco Bell to focus on value meals to attract customer traffic.

Despite these efforts, McDonald’s shares, which have fallen 15% this year, saw a brief rise of nearly 4% after executives announced that the US$5 meal deal launched in June exceeded expectations.

McDonald’s has pledged to be more selective with price increases to maintain profitability. The company continues to adhere to its 2024 forecast for an operating margin in the mid-to-high 40% range.

Brian Mulberry, client portfolio manager at Zacks Investment Management, noted that despite current challenges, customer traffic is expected to improve with better value offerings on the menu in the latter half of the year.

In the second quarter, global comparable sales saw a 1% decline, contrary to the anticipated 0.5% increase. Overall revenue, however, rose by 1%.

CEO Chris Kempczinski emphasized that consumers are becoming increasingly discerning, reflecting low consumer sentiment in most major markets.

U.S. comparable sales fell by 0.7%, a stark contrast to the 10.3% increase seen a year ago. International markets, particularly in France, China, and areas affected by the Middle East conflict, also experienced a decline in sales.
