Family, friends and members of South Africa's rugby fraternity have gathered in Qumrha in the Eastern Cape to bid farewell to former South Africa Under-19 rugby player Luqobo "Bibo" Makwedini.

The funeral service is being held in Makwedini's birthplace, where loved ones have come together to celebrate the life of the 20-year-old, whose promising rugby career came to a tragic end last month.

Makwedini died in France after suffering heatstroke during a training session with his club.

His death sent shockwaves through the South African rugby community, with tributes pouring in for the young tighthead prop, who was regarded as one of the country's rising rugby talents.

Makwedini had represented South Africa at Under-19 level before moving to France to pursue his ambition of playing professional rugby.

Family Pays Emotional Tribute To Luqobo Makwedini

Speaking to the SABC during the funeral service, family member Andile Makwedini described the emotional toll of losing the young rugby player.

"We are trying. Honestly, we are not coping at all. Family is devastated, and really, we are trying to be strong as much as we can, but at the end of the day we are celebrating ilanga lika Bibo," Andile said.

He said the family was doing its best to remain strong despite struggling to come to terms with the loss.
