From the many negative effects that come with the winter season, damaged hair should not be amongst your problems this winter.

The winter season can be seriously hard on hair. The cold, dry air, harsh weather, and everything that comes with it can make your hair dehydrated and more prone to breakage than the warmer months.

However, for every problem there is a solution. You can beat the cold this winter by following skilful advice for restoring damaged hair and make it become smoother and more radiant than ever before.

Following are ten tips for restoring damaged hair:

  1. Check the ingredients in your hair products

Shampoos and conditioners that are infused with herbs and sulphate-free, are perfectly suitable for dry hair. Those produced with oils such as soybean, sunflower, sweet almond and argon, have moisturising properties that’ll soften your hair.

  1. Be vigilant of the water temperature when washing your hair

Although cold water effectively seals the hair cuticles and decreases moisture loss, turning on the cold tap when it’s freezing can be a tough ask. Given that, try washing your hair with lukewarm water instead. Avoid piping hot water as it could worsen dryness.

  1. Wash your hair less regularly

Over washing strips your hair of natural oils that lock in moisture. If you normally wash your hair daily, adjust your routine by washing it every second or third day. To ensure that your tresses have a refreshing smell, use dry shampoo in between washes.

  1. Apply olive oil to your hair

Olive oil does wonders for dry hair. Simply warm (but not boil) approximately half a cup of olive oil and gently massage it into your hair. Next, cover your head with a towel and leave it on for 30 to 45 minutes. After that, you’ll be ready to rinse and shampoo your hair.

  1. Cut back on heat styling

Excess heat from tools such as hairdryers, straighteners and curling irons, triggers hair damage. If you can’t resist a good blowout, be sure to use heat protectant spray before you get going, and place a diffuser onto your hairdryer to disperse the heat.

  1. Brush your hair carefully

To prevent static build-up, comb your tresses with wet fingers before brushing. A large, round brush is your best option for creating volume without breaking hair shafts, and don’t brush from root to tip! Start a few centimetres from the bottom and slowly move upwards.

Experiment with new hairdos

If a tight ponytail is your go-to hairstyle or you love accessorising with metal clips, it’s time for a change. Comb your hair down a few days a week to help minimise stress on your hair, and jazz it up by sporting Alice bands made from soft material.

  1. Stay hydrated

One natural element that serves as the ultimate moisturiser is water. Insufficient intake of water causes a lack of moisture that dries out your hair. If it bothers you that water isn’t the tastiest beverage there is, add a sprig of mint or a slice of lemon for extra flavour.

  1. Incorporate nutritious foods into your diet

Omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants are hugely beneficial for hair health. Fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel and tuna, are rich in these compounds, not to mention delicious! Recommended veggies to enjoy with your fish include tomatoes, broccoli and kidney beans.

  1. Remember to take your supplements

Besides food, supplements can give you your daily dose of omega-3 fatty acids. Just swallow a capsule of borage oil, flaxseed oil or evening primrose oil, up to thrice a day. Vitamin A, vitamin C, biotin and iron, are also key for nourishing your tresses.
