Recently, the internet collectively gasped, swooned, and then promptly debated whether to cringe or cheer when a video of Romeo serenading Basetsana went viral.

The performance garnered mixed reactions, with some people jokingly suggesting that the couple wants to send them to house arrest.
One Twitter user, @tintswalo777, commented, “So cringe! 😩 I’m going to work very hard so that I don’t have rich friends who will subject me to such.” Another user, @krugersville, added, “I want to say my shit, but it’s fine, it’s fine. Let him be Somizi.”
The reactions ranged from humorous to sceptical, with some questioning the authenticity of the performance.
It’s fascinating how a simple video can spark such a wide range of reactions from the public. Social media has given everyone a platform to voice their opinions, and sometimes the responses can be quite entertaining.
Take, for example, @vito_g_wagon’s comment, “Let me avoid house arrest… beautiful 🤍,” which cleverly ties in the theme of house arrest while appreciating the performance.
On the other hand, @mel0_mg’s comment highlights the disappointment of some viewers who were expecting a more romantic and captivating moment.
They wrote, “That movie you watched, good script but bad acting… this was supposed to be romantic, but the kiss was cold, hug was quick and forced… I was waiting for that wow minutes moment but never came.” It seems that not everyone was swept off their feet by the performance.

Recently, Basetsana and Romeo welcomed the sentence handed down in their drawn-out court battle against author and activist Jackie Phamotse.
Phamotse received a sentence of two years of correctional supervision (house arrest) and a fine of R30,000, with the possibility of imprisonment if she fails to pay. She informed the court that she could afford an upfront amount of R4,000 and would settle the remaining balance in monthly instalments.
In addition to the financial penalties, Phamotse has been ordered to perform 16 hours of community service per month throughout her correctional supervision. She is also required to report to a social worker monthly and participate in life skills programs as instructed by her supervisors.
This sentence stems from Phamotse’s social media posts in 2018, where she insinuated that a famous media mogul and her husband were involved in a sex tape with a young male rapper.
Although Phamotse never named anyone directly, her descriptions fueled online speculation, and Basetsana and Romeo Kumalo’s names were mentioned enough times to trend on social media. The couple released a statement at the time, dismissing Phamotse’s claims as “salacious.”
This court battle added another layer of controversy to Basetsana and Romeo’s public image, further fueling the discussions surrounding their recent viral performance. It’s a reminder that public figures often face challenges in maintaining their reputation and dealing with the consequences of false accusations.
