KZN Police Officer Arrested For Assaulting Girlfriend

A 39-year-old police officer is set to appear at Hammersdale Magistrate’s Court in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) on Tuesday, following allegations of assaulting his girlfriend.
The officer, who holds the rank of sergeant, was apprehended on Tuesday and charged with assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, according to Police Spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda.

The incident is said to have occurred on Sunday night along the Mthoko Mkhize main road, where the officer allegedly assaulted a 29-year-old woman. The suspect is stationed at Mpumalanga Police Station in Hammersdale.
Investigations are already underway regarding the victim’s claims that she was initially denied the opportunity to file a case.
Colonel Netshiunda emphasized that if the allegations hold merit, appropriate internal procedures will be initiated, and the responsible officers will face disciplinary action. KZN Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlamhla Mkhwanazi reiterated that no one, including police officers, is above the law.
He emphasized the importance of police officers setting an example and actively combating violence against women and children.
The South African Police Service prioritizes gender-based violence (GBV) cases, and frontline officers are expected to adhere to the Domestic Violence Act and act accordingly.
This incident follows another tragic event where a 27-year-old Durban Metro Police officer allegedly fatally stabbed his girlfriend, who was also an officer. The suspect reportedly recorded videos and took pictures of the incident, distributing them on social media.
The suspect in this case is also scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday. These incidents highlight the urgent need for police officers to uphold the law and protect the vulnerable, both on and off duty. The South African Police Service remains committed to addressing GBV and ensuring that those who commit crimes face justice.
