Julius Mkhwanazi Fired: EMPD Top Cop Loses Job After Disciplinary Hearing

Julius Mkhwanazi’s troubles have taken another turn after the City of Ekurhuleni terminated his employment following the conclusion of an internal disciplinary hearing.

The senior Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) officer faced four internal charges, with the disciplinary process reportedly taking three years to reach its conclusion.

His dismissal comes as Mkhwanazi also faces separate criminal proceedings, including allegations linked to the disposal of a murdered businessman’s body and the theft of precious stones.

Julius Mkhwanazi Fired After Four Internal Charges

The City of Ekurhuleni’s disciplinary process against Mkhwanazi was initially expected to get under way three years ago.

However, the hearing was only recently concluded, resulting in the termination of his contract with the municipality.

One of the allegations against Mkhwanazi involved the unlawful issuing of police blue lights to a company reportedly linked to Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, who has himself been described in reports as an alleged criminal figure.

The disciplinary charges were separate from the criminal matters currently facing Mkhwanazi.

EMPD Cop Faces Multiple Criminal Cases

Mkhwanazi’s dismissal follows a turbulent period in which he has reportedly been arrested five times within five months.

He was also recently denied bail in connection with one of the criminal matters, adding to the legal challenges facing the former EMPD top cop.

In one case, Mkhwanazi is accused of assisting with the disposal of the body of businessman Emmanuel Mbense, who was allegedly murdered.

Precious Stones Worth Almost R15 Million Allegedly Stolen

Another case involves allegations that Mkhwanazi facilitated the theft of precious stones valued at almost R15 million.

The stones were allegedly later sold for only R110,000, according to the allegations against him.

The criminal allegations remain matters for the courts, while his dismissal stems from the municipality’s separate internal disciplinary proceedings.

Mkhwanazi’s removal from the EMPD therefore marks another significant development in a year that has seen the senior officer face multiple arrests, criminal proceedings and now the loss of his municipal position.
